Two Injured In Indiana Crash After Driver Falls Asleep At The Wheel

February 29, 2012

Fatigued driving may be the cause of a Taylorsville, Indiana, car accident that left two men injured yesterday. According to reports from The Republic, the crash happened just after 3:15 PM, in the southbound lanes of I-65 near the Taylorsville exit.

The Chief Deputy of the Bartholomew County Sheriffs Department, Maj. Todd Noblitt, stated that a 68-year-old man was driving a van down the highway with a 61-year-old passenger when he began to drift to sleep. As he slipped deeper into sleep, the van began to veer off to the shoulder of the highway where it plowed through approximately 30-feet of guardrail before flipping.

The two men were able to get free from the wreckage and were taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. The driver was treated for hip pain, while the passenger received care for minor injuries to his arms.

Fatigued driving can be as dangerous as drinking a driving. Statistics from the Department of Transportation show that driver fatigue is a factor in 19 percent of accidents and the cause of nearly 5 percent of all fatal crashes. Fatigue:

  • Slows Reaction Time
  • Decreases Awareness
  • Impairs Judgment

If you’re driving, the Indiana Auto Accident Attorneys with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin suggest allowing yourself time to stop and rest if needed. Roll down the windows and talk until you find a safe place to stop. Also, remember to allow yourself time to become alert before driving after resting.

Six People Injured in Terre Haute, Indiana, Multi-Vehicle Crash

February 22, 2012

Six people were injured in a chain-reaction car accident Tuesday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana. Reports from the Tribune-Star indicate that the crash occurred around 9:45 AM at the intersection of 13th and Crawford Streets.

Assistant Terre Haute Police Department Chief Shawn Keen said the incident began when an officer noticed a pickup truck speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. When the officer flashed his lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated and slammed into the rear end of a 1999 Ford Mustang. The impact caused the Mustang to then slam into the rear end of other vehicles stopped in traffic.

The driver of the Mustang was pinned in the wreckage that had caught fire, but was pulled to safety after employees of nearby businesses rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. One worker smashed in the driver side window of the Mustang to pull the victim free. Police say the quick action probably saved the woman’s life.

All of the injured victims were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Indiana Tractor-Trailer Crash Leaves One Dead and Two Others Injured

February 15, 2012

A tractor-trailer driver was killed and two others injured in a collision Tuesday morning along Interstate 70 in Hendricks County, Indiana. According to reports from the Tribune-Star, the crash happened around 7:30 AM, near mile marker 57, just outside Monrovia, Indiana.

Reports from the incident filed by troopers with the Indiana State Police who responded to the scene indicate that a 64-year-old truck driver from Indiana was broken down on the side of the interstate and hooking up to a tow truck driven by a 30-year-old man. The two men were standing between the tow truck and the big rig when a second tractor-trailer, driving much faster than other vehicles according to witnesses, jackknifed and slammed into the trailer of the disabled semi. The impact caused the truck to lurch forward and pinned the big rig’s driver between the two vehicles.

The man who was pinned was declared dead at the scene, while the tow truck driver suffered critical injuries to his lower body and remains hospitalized at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was also injured.

The trucking industry is regulated by stringent rules that are designed to protect drivers and other motorists from harm while sharing the road with these massive commercial vehicles.

The Indiana Truck Accident Lawyers with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin send our condolences to the families of those who were injured or lost their lives in Tuesday’s collision.

Right To Work Bill Signed Into Law In Indiana By Governor Daniels

February 8, 2012

Changes in the way companies conduct business have come in Indiana after Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law the Right-To-Work Bill. An article released by Businessweek stated that the new law prohibits labor contracts that require workers to pay union representation fees.

Supporters of the law say that the move will create a pro-business climate in the area that will bring new companies, and therefore new jobs, to the state.

Opponents of the law disagree with this statement saying that there is no evidence to prove that right-to-work laws actually create jobs.

The law can also create an unfair work environment if you consider that it creates a free-rider problem where employees can reap the benefits of working at a unionized company without paying dues.

Opponents add that prohibiting the contracts will actually take away any protection to rights that unions can provide to workers. Now, if a worker is injured, they will face the battle of collecting workers’ compensation or disability benefits on their own, rather than having the backing of a union.

The Indiana Social Security Disability and workers’ compensation attorneys with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin are here to help you if you have been seriously injured while on the job and are having trouble getting the compensation you need in order to cover your expenses such as medical bills and property damages. Helmets Save the Lives of Indiana Bikers

February 1, 2012

While riding a motorcycle or moped can be an effective and efficient way of getting around town, they do present a greater risk of injury to the rider in the event of an accident.

Take for instance the case reported by WTHITV 10 News yesterday of a moped rider left in critical condition after crashing into a vehicle without a helmet on. The crash happened at around 4:00 Monday afternoon at the intersection of Johnson Avenue and US-41 when the 49-year-old male moped driver collided with the rear end of a sedan. The man was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in critical condition.

While Indiana state law only requires riders under the age of 18-years-old to wear a helmet and eye protection, the practice is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent injury, no matter the rider’s age. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmets are 67 percent effective in preventing traumatic brain injuries.

Head injuries are the leading cause of death for motorcycle accident victims in the United States today, and that two-thirds of operators involved in fatal crashes were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The Indiana motorcycle accident lawyers with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin ask that bikers protect themselves from injury by always wearing approved safety gear when out riding. If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident at no fault of your own, contact an experienced attorney today.
