Six People Injured in Terre Haute, Indiana, Multi-Vehicle Crash

Six people were injured in a chain-reaction car accident Tuesday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana. Reports from the Tribune-Star indicate that the crash occurred around 9:45 AM at the intersection of 13th and Crawford Streets.

Assistant Terre Haute Police Department Chief Shawn Keen said the incident began when an officer noticed a pickup truck speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. When the officer flashed his lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated and slammed into the rear end of a 1999 Ford Mustang. The impact caused the Mustang to then slam into the rear end of other vehicles stopped in traffic.

The driver of the Mustang was pinned in the wreckage that had caught fire, but was pulled to safety after employees of nearby businesses rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. One worker smashed in the driver side window of the Mustang to pull the victim free. Police say the quick action probably saved the woman’s life.

All of the injured victims were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Take for instance the case reported by WTHITV 10 News yesterday of a moped rider left in critical condition after crashing into a vehicle without a helmet on. The crash happened at around 4:00 Monday afternoon at the intersection of Johnson Avenue and US-41 when the 49-year-old male moped driver collided with the rear end of a sedan. The man was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in critical condition.

While Indiana state law only requires riders under the age of 18-years-old to wear a helmet and eye protection, the practice is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent injury, no matter the rider’s age. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmets are 67 percent effective in preventing traumatic brain injuries.

Dangers Of Drunk Driving For Indiana Bikers

We all know how dangerous drinking and driving can be, but drinking and then getting on a motorcycle takes risky behavior to a whole other level. The Tribune-Star reported today that one motorcyclist who took his chances with drinking and biking lost the gamble Sunday night when he died after crashing his bike.

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department reported the accident occurred at approximately 10:15 PM in the northbound lanes of Indiana 63. Deputies stated that upon arrival at the crash scene, they found the 40-year-old victim, from Cayuga, Indiana, on the shoulder of the road. They added that it appeared the biker had gone off the road and struck a guardrail before coming to rest. Detectives and deputies who are currently investigating the crash further did confirm that alcohol played a part in the single-vehicle crash.

A Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report finds an increasing number of motorcyclists aged 40-44 are dying in alcohol-related crashes. According to the CDC, the rate of older adults who have died in alcohol-related motorcycle crashes increased from 1.2 per 100,000 population in 1983 to 1.9 in 2003.

Free Cab Rides Home Thanksgiving Eve In Terre Haute

Thanksgiving Eve is a night most people arrive to holiday destinations to visit and eat with friends and family the next day. Since most people don’t have to work the following day, the excitement of the upcoming holiday can often lead to heavy drinking. Are Indiana Drivers Really Safer With Texting Ban?

Since a texting ban on Indiana drivers took effect earlier this year, it would seem, that with only two tickets being issued for infractions of the law in Vigo County in more than three months, Indiana drivers are safer because of the law. Some Police department officials and citizens are saying the law is too difficult to enforce, and that that is the cause for low ticket numbers.

According to the Tribune-Star, the county’s two tickets were issued July 9 and September 12, The first at 1:00 AM on Third and Washington Street and the second at 8:00 AM on Third and Walnut Street. Both violations were classified as Class-C Infractions that carried a $120 fine for a first time offender. While the law has obviously raised public awareness of the dangers that texting while driving poses, many feel the law would be more effective if there was a better way to enforce it.

As of now, Police cannot look at a potential violators phone to see if messages were being sent, and texting cannot be the reason an officer pulls the vehicle over. Therefore, all a driver would allegedly have to do is exit message mode or turn off their phone before being pulled over to avoid a ticket.

Two Injured When Car Strikes Moped

An accident in which a car struck a moped occurred last Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and another to jail. The Terre Haute Tribune Star reported the accident occurred around 10:30 PM on US 40. The driver of the Buick Skylark involved in the crash stated that a driver in front of him made a sudden lane change, causing him to swerve to avoid a collision with that vehicle, instead striking the rear of the moped. The collision caused both the driver and a passenger on the moped to be thrown from it. The moped driver was transported to Union Hospital and remains there in fair condition. The passenger was thrown into the windshield of the car and was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, by helicopter and remains there in critical condition.

The driver of the car was not injured, but was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that Indiana has a no tolerance policy for schedule I and II drugs under Indiana Drug Per Se Laws.

Texting And Driving Banned In Indiana After July 1

After June 30th, you had better think again about sending someone a text message if you are behind the wheel of a vehicle. According to The Tribune Star, Indiana’s distracted driving law is undergoing some major overhauls that take effect July 1.

It will now be illegal to type, send, or read a text message or e-mail while operating a motor vehicle, punishable by a fine of up to $500. Current distracted driving laws prohibit drivers less than 18 years of age from operating any wireless device while behind the wheel.

Officers are finding that it will be a difficult law to enforce due to the many uses of cell phones today as calendars, music players, and other various functions. It is up to an individual officer’s discretion whether an infraction has occurred. Law prohibits authorities from confiscating a phone to see recent activity.

The wording of the law has many worried that it may not be effective, as it still allows talking on the phone and using the phone for numerous other applications such as video games or browsing the internet.

These activities can be just as dangerous as texting and driving and can just as easily lead to an accident that hurts yourself or someone else. Man injured in Terre Haute motocycle accident

Trib Star reports that a man was airlifted after a Terre Haut motorcyle accident.

The motorcyclist was heading west on Indiana 42 towards Palmer Street when a car from Palmer Street turned left onto Indiana 42 and in the path of the motorcycle.

When the motorcycle driver applied the brakes, he lost control of his motorcycle and it started to skid and the Terre Haute motorcycle accident resulted with the man being thrown off his motorcycle. The driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the Terre Haute motorcycle accident.

The man was unconscious when the emergency officials arrived, but gained consciousness when he was being transported to the hospital.

The driver was airlifted to an Indianapolis airport.

The driver of the other vehicle was cited for failing to yield the right of way after the Terre Haute motorcycle accident.

Two injured in Indiana motorcycle accident

The Journal and Courier reports, two men were taken to the hospital following an Indiana motorcycle accident.

The Indiana motorcycle accident happened around 10:05 am at the intersection of Indiana 26 and Creasy Lane. The driver and his son were riding the motorcycle when they were hit by a car.

Both passengers on the motorcycle were transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries following the Indiana motorcycle accident. The son is listed in satisfactory condition.

One killed in South Bend motorcycle accident

November 4, 2008

A town marshal was killed after a vehicle hit his motorcycle in a South Bend auto accident, reports WSBT News.

The man was traveling northbound on Ironwood when he was hit by a car traveling southbound. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after he hit the man in the South Bend motorcycle accident.

The driver of the vehicle drove erratically, veered off the road, and hit a tree. Police report the driver was later caught and taken to Memorial Hospital.
