Medics Uncover Growing Problem WIth Private Ambulances

June 15, 2011

The voices of medics across the state of Indiana are being heard as they shed light on a secret practice. Nursing homes are calling private ambulance companies, sometimes miles away, instead of dialing 911 in life threatening situations.

13 Investigates uncovered the story of an Indianapolis woman who died after going into cardiac arrest and waiting close to a half hour before a an ambulance arrived.

The report stated that the woman went into cardiac arrest around 8:15 PM on March 5. The nursing home the woman was living in called their private ambulance company, but was told it would be 20-30 minutes before they would arrive. Experts say the dispatcher should have realized this was too long to keep such a critical patient waiting and should have recommended the nursing home call 911 to alert an ambulance crew that was only five minutes away. Instead, he scrambled a crew from across town in order not to lose the run and the dollars associated with it.

“Unfortunately, private services, more at the management level, are so money driven, so hungry for being for-profit companies, that they will do everything in their power to not turn the run.” one medic explained.

Lawsuit filed in Chicago nursing home abuse case

February 24, 2009

The Chicago Tribune reports that the family of a nursing home resident who died last week filed an Illinois nursing home abuse lawsuit against the facility where she lived.

The victim froze to death when she wandered outside into the courtyard of the nursing home. She was found in the courtyard after being outside for about 90 minutes in freezing cold temperatures. The Chicago nursing home abuse victim was wearing an ankle bracelet that should have triggered an alarm when she went outside.

Although prosecutors are investigating this Chicago nursing home abuse case, the family of the deceased is planning to conduct its own investigation.

Court reinstates suit for Fort Wayne wrongful death case

April 15, 2008

An Indiana medical malpractice case that was originally dismissed by a trial court has now been turned into a Fort Wayne wrongful death case.

According to The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, a Fort Wayne wrongful death case has been filed against a Fort Wayne nursing home for the neglect and death of a woman who was supposed to be recovering from surgery on her femur.

The Fort Wayne wrongful death suit claims that the Indiana woman tore her surgical incision because she was given a wheelchair that was too small, suffered from ulcers because she was left on a bed pan for six hours, and after a dialysis treatment was found in her room lying in her own pool of blood.

A possible trial will determine the outcome of the Indiana wrongful death suit.
