Indiana Woman Killed In Accident With Tractor-Trailer

A 43-year-old Valparaiso, Indiana, woman was killed after being involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Tuesday. According to The Post-Tribune, the accident happened at the intersection of U.S. 30 and CR 600 West in Porter County.

Reports from troopers with the Indiana State Police say that the 52-year-old driver of a 2009 Freightliner truck was heading west on U.S. 30 when he began to cough uncontrollably. He says that he realized the light had turned red as he approached the intersection, but that he was unable to stop the truck due to his coughing fit. The semi-truck screeched into the intersection and collided with a maroon SUV that was going south on 600W. The impact sent the vehicles across the median before coming to rest in the oncoming lanes of traffic.

While the driver of the truck and a passenger who was in the cab escaped the accident unscathed, the driver of the van died at the scene of the accident.

It is unclear whether the driver of the truck will face any charges in connection with the crash until troopers complete a full investigation into the accident.

Six Injured In Multi-Vehicle Terre Haute Accident

A traffic accident that was caused by a driver fleeing from police may have caused several injuries, but it also brought out the best in the witnesses. According to reports from WTHITV 10 News, the accident happened last Wednesday at 9:46 a.m. at the intersection of South 13th and Crawford Streets in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Video footage of the incident taken from a nearby store’s surveillance camera shows a pickup truck plow through three vehicles, including a Ford Mustang that burst into flames when its fuel tank ruptured, with a police car in pursuit. The footage then shows the pickup truck leaving the scene of the accident.

Witnesses and those who were involved in the collision rushed to the aid of a woman trapped inside the burning Mustang, all of whom showed courage by working to free the woman despite the danger the burning vehicle posed. Rescuers were eventually able to extinguish the flames and cut the woman free from the wreckage.

In all, six people were injured in the accident and taken to a local hospital to receive treatment.

Charges could be filed against the driver of the pickup truck pending the outcome of a full investigation into the crash.

Six People Injured in Terre Haute, Indiana, Multi-Vehicle Crash

Six people were injured in a chain-reaction car accident Tuesday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana. Reports from the Tribune-Star indicate that the crash occurred around 9:45 AM at the intersection of 13th and Crawford Streets.

Assistant Terre Haute Police Department Chief Shawn Keen said the incident began when an officer noticed a pickup truck speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. When the officer flashed his lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated and slammed into the rear end of a 1999 Ford Mustang. The impact caused the Mustang to then slam into the rear end of other vehicles stopped in traffic.

The driver of the Mustang was pinned in the wreckage that had caught fire, but was pulled to safety after employees of nearby businesses rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. One worker smashed in the driver side window of the Mustang to pull the victim free. Police say the quick action probably saved the woman’s life.

All of the injured victims were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Indiana Tractor-Trailer Crash Leaves One Dead and Two Others Injured

A tractor-trailer driver was killed and two others injured in a collision Tuesday morning along Interstate 70 in Hendricks County, Indiana. According to reports from the Tribune-Star, the crash happened around 7:30 AM, near mile marker 57, just outside Monrovia, Indiana.

Reports from the incident filed by troopers with the Indiana State Police who responded to the scene indicate that a 64-year-old truck driver from Indiana was broken down on the side of the interstate and hooking up to a tow truck driven by a 30-year-old man. The two men were standing between the tow truck and the big rig when a second tractor-trailer, driving much faster than other vehicles according to witnesses, jackknifed and slammed into the trailer of the disabled semi. The impact caused the truck to lurch forward and pinned the big rig’s driver between the two vehicles.

The man who was pinned was declared dead at the scene, while the tow truck driver suffered critical injuries to his lower body and remains hospitalized at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was also injured.

Truck Driver Killed In Putnam County, Indiana

A truck driver was killed Monday afternoon when he crashed his tractor-trailer into a bridge in Putnam County, Indiana. According to Channel 10 News, the accident happened at 4:30 in the afternoon along Interstate 70.

The 65-year-old driver of the big rig from Columbus, Ohio, was hauling a load of acetone–a chemical nearly twice as flammable as gasoline–when he lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a support beam of a bridge above the highway, and flipped the massive truck several times before screeching to a halt. The driver was declared dead when paramedics arrived.

HAZMAT Crews worked for nearly twelve hours after the crash to clean up the acetone spill along the highway.

Indiana Teen Hit By Pickup While Getting On The School Bus

The importance of stopping for school buses was highlighted yesterday in Clay County, Indiana, when a 15-year-old boy was injured after being hit by a pickup truck while attempting to board the school bus. According to The Tribune-Star, the accident occurred at 7:22 AM on Indiana 59, near Carbon.

Reports from the Indiana State Police show that the 22-year-old male driver of a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup failed to stop and yield to the right of way to a school bus that was picking up children. The red lights were on and the cross arm was out when the young man in the pickup hit the boy as he attempted to cross the street to get on the bus. The teen suffered broken legs and several other bruises and lacerations. He was last listed in good condition at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The driver of the pickup was charged with misdemeanor criminal recklessness with a vehicle and reckless driving for allegedly passing the school bus stop arm and causing bodily injury to the teen. If convicted, the man could face years of jail time, thousands of dollars in fines, and the possibility of losing his license.

Free Cab Rides Home Thanksgiving Eve In Terre Haute

Are Indiana Drivers Really Safer With Texting Ban?

Since a texting ban on Indiana drivers took effect earlier this year, it would seem, that with only two tickets being issued for infractions of the law in Vigo County in more than three months, Indiana drivers are safer because of the law. Some Police department officials and citizens are saying the law is too difficult to enforce, and that that is the cause for low ticket numbers.

According to the Tribune-Star, the county’s two tickets were issued July 9 and September 12, The first at 1:00 AM on Third and Washington Street and the second at 8:00 AM on Third and Walnut Street. Both violations were classified as Class-C Infractions that carried a $120 fine for a first time offender. While the law has obviously raised public awareness of the dangers that texting while driving poses, many feel the law would be more effective if there was a better way to enforce it.

As of now, Police cannot look at a potential violators phone to see if messages were being sent, and texting cannot be the reason an officer pulls the vehicle over. Therefore, all a driver would allegedly have to do is exit message mode or turn off their phone before being pulled over to avoid a ticket.

Man Killed And Two Others Injured By Semi-truck

A man was killed last Wednesday night outside Indianapolis, Indiana, when he stopped to help another motorist change a tire and was hit by a semi-truck. According to Channel 10 News, the accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-465, just before midnight.

Authorities say two motorists in a silver Pontiac had stopped on the shoulder of the road to change a tire. Moments later, a pickup truck pulled up behind them. The four discussed the problem with the Pontiac and the men in the pickup offered help. As the group walked south toward the Pontiac, an approaching semi swerved onto the shoulder of the road and hit the passenger of the pickup. The man died instantly.

Flying debris from the crash hit the passenger of the Pontiac and the driver of the pickup, leaving both men in critical condition at area hospitals. The drivers of the Pontiac and semi-truck were the only two uninjured in the crash.

Investigators say the semi-truck driver had not recorded his hours of driving in his logbook, as required by law, and the vehicle also had a malfunction with its airbrakes. No charges have been filed in the case yet.

Indiana Garbage Truck Hits And Kills 17-Year-Old Worker

A 17-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after falling from a moving garbage truck. Channel 10 News reports the truck was operated as part of a business owned and run by members of the boy’s family.

The young man was riding on the front of the truck on a county road on the outskirts of Parker City, Indiana, as the crew the boy was a member of worked to pick up trash along the road.

Delaware County Deputy Coroner, Jim Clevenger, said he believes the truck hit a pothole in the road, sending the boy flying off the front of the truck and landing on the road directly in the vehicle’s path. The driver did not have time to stop and ran the young man over. Another worker, who was also riding on the front of the truck, was also thrown from the vehicle when it hit the bump, and suffered a broken leg in his fall. He was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie for treatment.
