Truck Driver Killed In Fiery Indiana Crash

August 24, 2011

The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was killed following an accident when his truck caught fire and engulfed the cab in flames. According to WISHTV 8 News, the crash, which occurred near Cloverdale, Indiana, along eastbound I-70, closed lanes for nearly seven hours while police conducted an investigation into the cause of the collision.

Around 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon, the semi truck was driving down the highway behind a delivery truck. As the significantly smaller box truck began to slow for an upcoming construction zone, the 18-wheeler plowed into it’s rear-end.

The collision caused the tractor-trailer’s fuel line to ignite and the fire immediately trapped the driver in the cab. By the time police made it to the scene, the flames were out of control and firefighters only arrived after the entire cab was ablaze. The driver was pulled from the charred cab after the fire was extinguished and declared dead at the scene.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS), Indiana had a total of 142 fatal truck crashes in 2007, and a total of 147 people were killed because of truck accidents.
