Several recent Indiana Motorcycle Accidents have led many concerned citizens to question if changes need to be made to the state’s motorcycle helmet laws.
According to Indiana’s News Center, the most recent crash happened in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 4, along SR 327, outside of Auburn, Indiana. Reports indicate the 21-year-old victim was riding his bike west along the road without a helmet when he suddenly lost control, crossed the median, and crashed into a ditch on the far side of the road. The motorcyclist was ejected from the machine, where he then struck his head on a tree. He died at the scene.
Just two weeks prior, a 64-year-old West Point man was riding a 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle east along Indiana 28 at around 9:15 a.m. Investigators say the motorcyclist hit loose gravel and lost control of the bike before crashing and suffering serious head, neck, and back injuries. He was also not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Current law states only motorcyclists under the age of 18-years-old must wear helmets when riding motorcycles.
