Columnist calls Social Security benefits ‘middle-class welfare’

Newsweek columnist Robert J. Samuelson was under fire for calling Social Security benefits “middle-class welfare.”

The comment caused backlash from Newsweek readers all over the country.

The columnist didn’t recant his statement but said Social Security benefits aren’t called “welfare” because it has a negative connotation that politicians don’t want to use to offend others.

He also said because of the spending used for programs for the elderly, such as Social Security benefits, exempting those programs from cuts would establish large deficits, tax increases, or severe reduction in other programs.
