Social Security numbers, personal information stolen in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Aging (DOA) warns customers that their personal information may be in jeopardy, according to KWCH News.

A laptop computer, flash drive, and paper files were stolen out of a locked vehicle used by an DOA employee in Wichita, Kansas, last week.

The Social Security numbers of 100 Senior Care Act program participants have been stolen. DOA says that it has tried to call these 100 people.

Seven thousand participants in the Older American Act program, including Meals on Wheels, are also at risk. Their numbers were not stolen, but other personal information was taken. This group will receive a letter from the DOA.

The files, containing personal and protected health information, primarily involved customers located in Sedgwick, Harvey, and Butler counties.

The stolen data and documents may include full customer names, complete addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, gender, in-home services program participation information, Medicaid identification numbers, etc.

No banking, credit card, or driver license information was involved.

“We are immediately reviewing policies and procedures relevant to information security, especially for those employees whose duties require travel off-site, to prevent a similar situation from recurring,” stated the secretary of the DOA .
