Alabama Man Gets Probation After Spending Dead Mother’s Social Security Checks

A 58-year-old resident of Prichard, Alabama, received five years probation last week for illegally collecting $33,588 in Social Security monies after his mother died.

The man, who never reported his mother’s death to the Social Security Administration, plead guilty to theft of public money in January. He’s also been ordered to pay back the government.

According to The Alabama Press-Register, the man’s attorney argued that his client was in a desperate situation; while waiting for a response to his application for Social Security Disability, his client suffered serious health problems and could claim no assets other than a $20,000 house. The lawyer said that while this didn’t excuse his client’s actions it did help to explain them.

The man admitted to the judge that he gave little thought to the implications of his crime, saying he was “just trying to survive. “
