Many Recipients Of Social Security Disability Say The Program Is Hard to Leave

April 8, 2013

While government officials believe there are several causes for the lack of an economic turn around, many claim a large portion of the problem stems from a lack of workers being able or willing to leave the nation’s Social Security Disability Insurance program.

According to an article from The Wall Street Journal, the nation’s unemployment rate was at 7.6 percent in a report issued this past Friday. Economist, Michael Feroli, attributes this to a growing number of workers who are unable or unwilling to rejoin the workforce.

Many workers say they cannot continue doing the work they once did, but lack educational resources to learn a new trade.

This problem is only being compounded by a lack of new employees entering the workforce. In March, the number of individuals joining the workforce was only up by 0.2 percent compared to the same time a year earlier. In the previous decade, the nation’s workforce had grown by an average of 1.2 percent per year.

In an effort to solve the problem, the White House submitted a budget that would call for loopholes in the law to be closed that allow citizens to collect both unemployment and disability benefits at the same time.
