Social Security Disability Benefits Can Take 800 Days to Process

Although a person can save funds for medical insurance, life insurance, and six months to a year of pay in case of an emergency, when an accident or debilitating illness strikes, these funds may be insufficient, according to The Street.

The good news is that Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), a government benefit provided through the Social Security Administration (SSA) can help. A portion of our taxes funds the program, which was established in 1954.

For at least a year, benefits are paid out to those unable to work either until they are well enough to resume their job or until traditional Social Security kicks in at age 65.

It may sound like a godsend to those who need it. The bad news is that it can take years to collect.

Approximately 3.4 million people applied for SSDI in the fiscal year 2011, and the majority were rejected.

The backlog of cases has grown to more than 1.8 million people across all levels of the five-step evaluation process, and the cumulative wait time can be more than 800 days.

This is expected to worsen in years to come as government cutbacks trim the SSA’s staff.

Now more than ever, you may need a SSD lawyer to help you navigate the system.
