Social Security Disability Lawyers Discuss the Complexities of Supplemental Security Income

There are millions of American children who are disabled and living below the poverty line. A recent story from The Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of a 2-year-old girl who suffers from a condition known as Klumpke’s Palsy that resulted from an injury at birth. The child’s parents have a combined income of less than $17,000 per year, but the child’s medical bills can easily be more than $20,000 annually.

The child’s parents have applied for Social Security disability benefits on the child’s behalf, but have been denied. This has forced the family to apply for benefits through a program called Supplemental Security Income. The program provides benefits for anyone who is disabled and does not have enough resources for income.

The program is notoriously difficult to get into though, considering statistics show as many as six out of ten children who apply for benefits are denied.
