Study Shows Benefit Payouts Increase, But Fewer Receive Assistance

New figures from Johns Hopkins University are showing the U.S. is spending more than ever before on benefits programs like Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income; however, these programs offer their assistance to fewer and fewer people each year.

The findings were presented earlier this month at the Population Association of America’s annual meeting. They showed a 74 percent increase in federal spending towards welfare programs over the past three decades.

A majority of the funds were given to those who worked, were part of a two-parent family, and had children.

However, an article from PBS Newshour explains there were some peculiarities to the results. The team found aid levels going to lower income families declined, while benefits going to similar families with higher income levels dramatically increased. This leaves many wondering why more benefits are not going to those who are in a situation of greater financial need for assistance.
