Social Security Administration Adds Conditions To List of Compassionate Allowances

January 17, 2014

There are currently hundreds of thousands of Americans who are unable to work due to a mental or physical condition who have waited long periods of time for a decision to be reached regarding their Social Security Disability claim. That’s why the government developed a program known as Social Security Disability Compassionate Allowances.

The program allows for individuals suffering from the most seriously debilitating health conditions to receive an expedited decision regarding their Social Security Disability claims. Until recently, there were roughly 200 such conditions qualifying under the program. This past Wednesday though, the Social Security Administration’s Acting Commissioner, Carolyn W. Colvin, announced 25 more conditions would be added to the list.

While all the conditions that were added to the list can be seen here, the additions consisted of several different types of cancers and disorders that can affect the digestive, neurological, immune systems.

Similar additions were cited as a contributing factor in reducing the backlog of unprocessed benefit claims several years ago. Officials are hopeful the move may play a part in meeting the agency’s goal of eliminating the backlog in the next two years.

The Social Security Disability Lawyers with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin are hopeful the additions will allow those who are most in need of assistance to get the care they need in a timely manner.
