An unstable economy has prompted many to go into early retirement and collect social Security Benefits sooner than predicted.

According to npr.com, in 2010, more than 18 percent of the nation’s total personal income came from entitlement programs, one being Social Security benefits.

Social Security cuts prompt protests in 31 states

Republicans are posing a $1.7 billion cut to Social Security, promoting agency employees and Social Security beneficiaries to protest in 31 states, People’s World reports.

Members of the Puget Sound Alliance for Retired Americans protested where their Social Security claims are processed. They were joined by groups that represent Social Security employees.

Democrats fight to prevent Social Security benefits cuts

Nine senators, eight of whom are Democrats, have signed a letter seeking co-sponsors for legislation to block changes in Social Security benefits. They say the Social Security trust fund is strong and faces no crisis.
