Distracted driving is playing a contributing factor in a growing number of accidents involving motor vehicles that result in serious injuries. In fact, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that in 2011, a total of 387,000 motorists were injured in accidents stemming from distracted driving, while the number spiked to 421,000 victims being reported the following year.
More recently, the Terre Haute Car Accident Lawyers with Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin explain distracted driving was to blame for an accident that left a 79-year-old driver seriously injured. Reports indicate the crash happened on Saturday, December 14, at the railroad crossing located at the corner of Evans Avenue and Dwelling Road in the city of Terre Haute, Indiana.
According to ABC News, the victim was operating a minivan along the westbound lanes of the road as he approached the crossing. Police determined the driver was not paying attention as he crossed the railroad and a passing train struck his vehicle.
The impact of the collision left the motorist with critical head and leg injuries.
The accident highlights the serious dangers distracted driving can pose and leaves many motorists wondering what they can do to prevent being the victims of such a collision. The law firm’s Terre Haute Personal Injury Lawyers says one of the best ways to stay safe is to eliminate all distractions before driving and encouraging others to do the same.

Distracted driving is a serious problem across the United States, but especially in Indiana. Recent studies show that as many as half of all motorists admit to texting while driving.
Most recently, a Terre Haute Distracted Driving Accident resulted in five people being seriously injured. Records show the crash happened on Thursday, May 23, just before 4:40 p.m., along I-70 near the town of Cloverdale.
According to the Greencastle Banner-Graphic, the 24-year-old man responsible for causing the crash was driving a utility van west along the highway when he failed to recognize traffic that had slowed in front of him for construction. The man did not stop the vehicle in time and plowed into two other vehicles before coming to a halt.
The impact of the collision left the driver of the van trapped inside the wreckage, requiring rescue crews to cut him free using the Jaws of Life before being able to transport him to a local hospital for treatment. Four other motorists from the other vehicles that were involved in the crash were also taken to local trauma centers for further examination.
The Terre Haute Personal Injury Lawyers recognize the risks involved with driving while distracted. The firm may be able to help anyone who has been harmed in a motor vehicle collision that was caused by another driver’s distraction.
