Bill Would Amend Indiana Adoption Law Prohibiting Access to Birth Records

Adoption is a wonderful option for many families who are unable to have or support a child. The process has become so popular that in 2012, a total of 1,790 children from Indiana were placed into loving homes. The Terre Haute family law attorneys with Fleschner, Stark Tanoos & Newlin point out many of these children grow up with questions about their lineage though, leaving many to go in search of information about their biological parents.

Gaining access to the documents that contain such information is quite simple for those who were adopted after 1994. Indiana adoption law allows these individuals to access their birth records as long as their mother or father didn’t sign a non-release form, which prevents this data from being shared. For those who were adopted before 1994, getting a birth record can be a much more difficult process.

Until recently, individuals adopted before 1994 were not legally allowed to access their birth records. According to Hoosiers for Equal Access to Records, a new law called Senate Bill 352 aims to change that though, and would allow these individuals the same access to birth record information as those who were adopted after 1994.
