Construction on I-70 – Potential Dangers and How to Stay Safe

A large portion of I-70 is currently undergoing construction. Because semi-trucks use I-70 daily, a lot of physical damage has been inflicted on these roadways. This construction aims to correct this wear and tear through repaving, resurfacing, and improving ramps. Additionally, some nearby roads will also receive new sidewalks, storm sewers, curbs, and relocated gas lines.

I-70’s construction began on May 2nd of 2022 and is expected to conclude in late June of 2023. During this timeframe, active construction will take place between 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. To avoid this area, you may take an alternate route using US-40 between Indianapolis and Terre Haute. However, if you are taking I-70, there are a few changes you will want to be aware of. In July, the highway was altered only to have one viable lane between State Road 42 and the 29-mile marker. This change is expected to remain until the end of October.

How Construction Zones May Increase the Likelihood of Accidents

While driving on a road under construction, the chances of getting into an accident increase. Because of this, it is vital to proceed with extreme caution and attentiveness.

Unfortunately, it does not help that I-70 already has one of the highest accident rates in the country. Although it may seem like the reduced speed in construction zones may help decrease the risk of an accident, this is, in fact, what makes it more dangerous. In these scenarios, it is common for cars to come to a complete standstill. However, if someone is distracted while driving, they may not notice this change in traffic flow and may cause a rear-end collision. Additionally, drivers may be more likely to collide with a construction worker if they are not aware of their surroundings.

In an effort to combat this, police are actively trying to decrease driving speeds in these areas. To avoid a construction zone accident, it is vital to maintain a steady pace, eliminate distractions, remain alert, and watch out for nearby workers.
