Fatal Indiana Truck Accident Causes Chain Reaction Crashes That Injure Seven

June 27, 2012

A series of Indiana auto accidents along I-70 Tuesday was responsible for injuring seven people and killing another. According to WTHITV 10 News, the initial crash occurred at the highway’s 30-mile marker, in Putnam County, around 4:00 p.m.

Police say that a 70-year-old man, driving a 2002 Ford Explorer, was stopped in the left-most eastbound lane of the highway due to construction, when the driver of a cement truck lost control of his vehicle due to his left wheels sinking into freshly poured cement. The 70,000-pound truck then toppled over on top of the SUV. The accident killed the rear passenger instantly and severely injured the driver and front seat passenger.

As traffic began to back up from both the construction and the accident, a second accident occurred when an SUV rear-ended a tractor-trailer. The driver of the SUV had to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

Within minutes, a third accident had occurred just down the road when a pickup truck rear-ended a small sedan. The occupants of the pickup were not wearing seatbelts and suffered serious injuries, while the motorists of the other vehicle were wearing theirs and escaped uninjured.
