Lawmakers Hope to Reduce Indiana Car Accidents With Stricter Distracted Driving Laws

Cellphones today allow us to communicate almost anywhere in the world. While most people see this unlimited access to talking and texting as a good thing, it can also prove to be extremely dangerous—especially when you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of the leading causes of car accidents today, accounting for as many as one-third of all motor vehicle collisions. That’s why a group called the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety are calling for all states to ban texting or talking on cellphones while driving.

Our state has heeded these suggestions, and in order to reduce Indiana car accidents that are caused by distracted drivers, Hoosier lawmakers have proposed a bill that would prohibit drivers from using handheld electronic devices while driving.

The state has a law in place that prohibits texting and driving, but an article from the Terre Haute Tribune Star explains legislators hope to expand the law. The aim is to make using any sort of electronic device to communicate while driving illegal. The only exception to the law would be if a call or text was being sent in an emergency situation.

At Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin, we’ve seen the devastating effect distracted driving can have and we’re hopeful the laws that have been proposed pass. In the meantime though, our Terre Haute personal injury lawyers explain you can do your part to prevent distracted driving accidents by promising to focus on the road while behind the wheel of a vehicle.
