Watchdog Group Calls Out Billionaire David Koch for Social Security Stand

May 6, 2011

On Wednesday, watchdog group Brave New Foundation released an inflammatory new viral video titled “Koch Brothers Exposed.” The eight-minute video juxtaposes footage of American businessman David Koch’s multi-million dollar homes with interviews featuring elderly persons who say they’re barely surviving off their Social Security checks and that the Koch brothers don’t want “government money spent on people that they feel are beneath being taken care of.”

David Koch and his brother Charles—both principal owners of Kansas-based energy conglomerate Koch Industries—have become infamous amongst some groups like the Brave New Foundation for their hearty financial support of Social Security privatization.

In 1980, David Koch ran as the Libertarian vice-presidential candidate, vowing to abolish Social Security. In recent years, the Koch brothers have supplied millions in financial support to think tanks that work to discontinue Social Security, says Brave New Foundation founder Robert Greenwald.

In a Wall Street Journal piece that David Koch authored in March 2011, he said, “Because of [my family’s] activism, we’ve been vilified by various groups. Despite this criticism, we’re determined to keep contributing and standing up for those politicians.”

Founded by Hollywood producer Robert Greenwald, Brave New Foundation is based out of Culver City, California. Greenwald told The New York Times that he hopes to release at least eight more videos assailing the Koch brothers.
