Researchers Discuss Developments in Mesothelioma Treatments

There’s a deadly form of cancer that is diagnosed in roughly 3,000 Americans each year and it’s called mesothelioma. Development of the disease is typically the result of exposure to asbestos. Despite there being no known cure for the disease just yet, many experts believe that could soon change.

Several new treatments are being developed that could significantly reduce the mortality rate of mesothelioma. An article released in the most recent issue of the Cancer Management and Research journal touched on a few of the most promising of these developing treatments.

Researchers explain that currently, a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery is used to battle the tumors that are caused by mesothelioma. In the future though, the treatments that are utilized could be much different. These new treatments include the use of:

  • Use of Growth-Inhibiting Antibodies- The expression of certain receptors can allow certain malignant cancers to grow uncontrollably. Now, scientists are examining the use of antibodies that can block these receptors from expressing themselves.
  • Vaccines- Teams are currently developing a drug, known as CRS-27, which could prevent patients from developing mesothelioma.
  • Gene Therapy– Researchers have been able to identify certain genetic anomalies that are linked to the development of mesothelioma. Now, they are working to block or correct these anomalies before the disease can develop.
  • Cryotherapy– This treatment uses extreme cold to freeze and kill cancerous cells and masses.

Despite what therapy is used to treat mesothelioma, it can be extremely expensive. Financial assistance for treatment is often available for victims of mesothelioma, but the process of securing such compensation can be complex. That’s why it’s important to have legal representation by your side through each step of the process.
