Study Shows Increased Risk of Mesothelioma in Miners

Risks of Mining and Drilling

Mining and drilling are two of the fastest growing industries in the United States, but working in extrication continues to be one of the most dangerous jobs an American can hold.

Mesothelioma and Heart Disease

Exposure to harmful chemicals and substances is one of the most serious risks miners and drillers face. One new study showed long-term contact with both asbestos and tiny needle-like fibers found in the dust that rises during the taconite mining process can increase miners’ risk of developing Mesothelioma by as much as three times.

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that attacks the lungs and body cavity. There is currently no cure, but treatment options are available.

Reports from The Mesothelioma Center state researchers also found the miners who participated in the study had a 30 percent greater chance of developing heart disease as compared to control groups.

Reducing Exposure

While the study didn’t nail down the exact reason the miners were at an increased risk of developing heart disease, the findings have prompted recommendations that miners wear filtered respirators to reduce their chances of exposure to both asbestos and ore dust.

What Should I Do if I’ve Been Exposed?

For many, these recommendations will come too late and the exposure to deadly substances may have already occurred. Treating these medical conditions can be costly. That’s why it may be wise for you to speak with a legal representative if you believe you’ve developed a disease like Mesothelioma as the result of exposure to harmful chemicals. You may be entitled to compensation.
