The month of May has been declared Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Indiana. As such, our Terre Haute motorcycle accident attorneys at Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin would like to point out a few areas where both motorcyclists and drivers of cars and trucks could work to reduce collisions. They include:
- Looking Twice– Before entering an intersection or changing lanes on the highway, always be sure to look twice in all directions. This is especially important for motorists due to the high number of collisions that occur because a driver fails to recognize or yield the right-of-way to an oncoming motorcycle.
- Use Safety Gear– For motorists, buckling your seat belt should be your top priority each and every time you set foot in a vehicle. For motorcyclists, wearing a helmet will reduce your chances of death by as much as 37 percent and can slash your risk of a serious injury in the event of a crash by as much as 70 percent. In an article from MyWabashValley.com, officials suggest that along with a helmet, bikers should always wear eye protection, along with gloves, boots, and a sturdy leather jacket.
- Obey the Law– Be sure to adhere to all posted traffic signs and lights. Also, refrain from speeding and never drink and drive.
Our Terre Haute personal injury lawyers at Fleschner Stark, Tanoos & Newlin are hopeful these tips help keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe during the coming months of motorcycle season.
