Recently, America celebrated the 22 year anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
But even with the passage of this historical act, Americans with disabilities still face widespread discrimination when it comes to employment, according to Huffington Post. Only 32 percent of working age Americans with disabilities was part of the labor force as of June 2012.
Democratic Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa has made this issue a top priority. Hoping to add one million people with disabilities to the workforce by 2015, he is working with businesses, government, and nonprofits.
One example of how this can be done to the benefit of everyone is a Walgreens center in South Carolina. In 2007, this particular Walgreens built a high tech center and wanted 30 percent of the 800 jobs to be filled with disabled job seekers.
Not only did they beat that goal, but also they operated 20 percent more efficiently than other similar centers, according to the Kessler Foundation, the National Organization on Disability, and the Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.
Now other major companies such as Best Buy, Toys R Us, and Lowe’s have followed in Walgreen’s footsteps, adopting similar models and taking advantage of programs which help match disabled job seekers with company looking to hire.
