Qualifying for SSD with Sleep Apnea

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a list of hundreds of conditions that can qualify individuals for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, but a condition that has gained attention lately is sleep apnea. This disabling condition affects more than 18 million Americans, and the number of diagnosed cases has grown more than 100 percent since 2009.

Sleep apnea is recognized by the patient’s involuntary cessation of breathing with asleep. A person suffering from a sleep apnea disability can stop breathing hundreds of times throughout a night’s rest, sometimes for up to one minute. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to a series of diseases and problematic conditions such as:

This ensures the patient receives sufficient oxygen throughout the night, allowing them to stay asleep and get plenty of rest.

Even with this treatment, the condition may leave patients unable to work. In fact, Liberty Voice reported nine out of 10 veterans who suffer from the condition are considered at least 50 percent disabled.
